How Much Will The iPad 3 Cost?

There are a lot of rumours circulating the web at the moment, mainly about what features the iPad 3 is going to have, however I believe the main question on everybody’s lips is how much will the iPad 3 cost?

Now we all know that the current iPad 2 isn’t a cheap bit of kit, starting at £399/$499 and a lot of you might be thinking that with tablet sales increasing and tablet pricing decreasing that this would also apply to the next generation iPad 3. However we believe you would be wrong in thinking this, if we look at the new features the iPad 3 is rumoured to have – a new slimline battery that lasts even longer than its predecessors, reportedly costing apple 30% more, a retina display with twice as many pixels as before. These two huge features alone are enough to bump up the price of the iPad 3 let alone smaller features such as expandable memory, higher mega-pixel camera and much more.

Now obviously Apple still need to stay competitive to the market and we imagine they will take most of the hit on the increase in manufacturing costs, however even with this considered they are still going to need to increase the cost of the iPad 3 to us, the customers.

How much will the iPad 3 cost?

We predict the entry level iPad 3 will cost $529 in the US.

How much will the iPad 3 cost? (UK)

And in the UK we predict the iPad 3 will cost £429.

Well, I am tempted by the prospect I must say, but the pricing is still far too high for a ‘netbook’ with no keypad, usb ports, hinge, hard disk, ethernet plug, or sd slot. And which won’t boot Linux or (shudder) any other OS.

Let me see. A whole cluster of 10″ netbooks around the £250 mark. I’d pay another £20 for the improved portability, £20 for the 10 hour life, if true, and £50 for the high res screen. Knock off £10 for lack of a keyboard, or anything else to protect the screen, and I’d be happy to pay £330.

The £50 I propose for the screen is an extra 20% on my base price, in case you don’t think it enough. That should allow them to more than double what they are paying for the screen and still include a profit on the higher resolution.

Great to see you thoughts on this Bob, and I have to say I totally agree with the points you have made, and in terms of a logical price for the iPad 3 yours is very accurate. However we have to take in to terms the ‘Apple’ tag you will pay on their products which is always going to bump the price up considerably.

It may bump the price up, but it doesn’t mean I will pay it!

  • Mark

I’m sure Apple will lower the price just for you Bob. While you may not buy it at $500+, thousands of others will.
